Posted on April 17, 2015

The Board of Trustees at New Saint Andrews has named Dr. Benjamin Merkle as the next president of the classical Christian liberal arts college in Moscow, ID.

Dr. Merkle, an Oxford University graduate and 12-year college administration veteran, was selected by unanimous vote at a special board meeting today. The appointment is the culmination of a five-month national search involving representation from all the constituents of the College.

As the College's second president, Merkle succeeds Dr. Roy Atwood who stepped down in November 2014 after 15 years at the College. Given his current role as the Interim President, Dr. Merkle's appointment is effective immediately. A formal installation will be arranged in the coming months.

"New Saint Andrews College is very fortunate to have such a qualified candidate as Dr. Merkle," said Board Chairman Csaba Leidenfrost. "He has a passion for the vision set out by the Board for the College and he knows maintaining an outstanding college is an important element for successful recruitment and enrollment."

Dr. Merkle's previous roles at the College prior to his stint as Interim President include Chief Academic Officer, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Student Affairs. He holds a D.Phil. in Oriental Studies from Oxford University ('12), a MST degree in Jewish Studies from Oxford University ('07), as well an MA in English Literature from the University of Idaho ('05), and a BS in Education also from the University of Idaho ('96). He has been a member of the New Saint Andrews faculty since 2000 and currently holds the rank of Fellow of Theology.
