One of the ways [the new atheists] misuse science is to overstate the findings, the certainty of science. But I think—and this is really unfortunate—in one sense they overestimate science, saying it can give you knowledge about this realm, with this certainty, but they also underestimate science. Science is a lot harder than you would imagine when you hear some of these guys write. And the amount of effort that it takes to come up with the scientific theory is immense. Scientists are rightly [considered] heroic in some sense. And so I think seeing how difficult science is allows us to appreciate science more, but it also can undermine some of the philosophy that the atheists try to get out of science.
