Convocation marks start of College's 14th academic year

More than 160 full- and part-time students from 33 states, six foreign countries, and 25 denominations signed "The Book" as part of Convocation, Tuesday, August 14, marking the formal start to the 2007-2008 academic year. Classes began Wednesday, August 15.

The ceremony also marked the inauguration of the College's first graduate program. The Rev. Jung Jin Ahn, of Korea, was the first graduate student to sign "The Book" as part of the ceremony.

Joining the freshmen and graduate students as new members of the College community were three new faculty members: Jayson Grieser (below right), Jonathan McIntosh (below center) and Tim Griffith (not pictured).

This year's freshman class is the most "mature" in the College's history. Thirty of the first year students are 19 years old or older.

Approximately 55 percent of the student body was home schooled. Fifty-six percent of the students are women this year.

Speaking at Convocation this year were Senior Fellow and Trustee Douglas Wilson, Graduate Dean Dr. Peter Leithart, and Undergraduate Dean Chris Schlect.

An ice cream social was held on Friendship Square after the Convocation ceremony at the Nazarene Church, Moscow.

Like father, like son . . .

Leepike Ridge and Letter from a Christian Citizen score back-to-back national honors as "Books of the Week"

Fellow Nathan Wilson

Senior Fellow Doug Wilson

Christianity Today's Books & Culture, one of the nations' most widely read journals of Christian thought and review, selected Fellow Nate Wilson's new children's adventure story, Leepike Ridge, as its "Book of the Week" on May 28.

Nate Wilson's father and Senior Fellow Doug Wilson had his book, Letter from a Christian Citizen, selected as the magazine's previous "Book of the Week."

The back-to-back "Book of the Week" honors for a father and son and from faculty members at the same College was unprecedented.

Books & Culture reviewer Matthew Dickerson wrote that Wilson's Leepike Ridge "an interesting mix of several genres, well blended to form an enjoyable and captivating tale.

"The suspense is well done," Dickerson said, "sufficient to keep a reader's interest—I was captivated enough to read the book through the first time in one sitting—but Wilson is equally successful at giving us [a] cast of main characters we really care about, who are invested or become invested in events and decisions which are important. And that makes Leepike Ridge a good novel—and not merely good 'young adult' fiction."

Congratulations to both men for the back-to-back national honors. For more information about the two books, see the stories below or link to Canon Press or the College Bookstore.

Fellow Nate Wilson's major new children's adventure, Leepike Ridge, debuts from Random House publishing

Fellow Nate Wilson's major new children's book from Random House was released Tuesday, May 22, and the Moscow community turned out to welcome its publication with a signing party at the Palouse Mall. The event was attended by several hundred well-wishers and autograph seekers who were treated to milk and cookies as an added bonus.

In addition to the national release of Leepike Ridge, Mr. Wilson also had two other new children's books on biblical themes published by Canon Press come out at the same time, The Dragon and the Garden and In the Time of Noah. He autographed the three books purchased by well-wishers for about three hours.

Congratulations, Nate Wilson!

What the reviewers are saying about Leepike Ridge

"While Leepike Ridge is primarily an adventure story involving murder, treachery, and betrayal, Wilson's rich imagination and his quirky characters are a true delight . . . There are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep both seasoned and reluctant readers turning the pages. Think Mark Twain with a contemporary and utterly captivating twist."

School Library Journal Review

"Wilson's debut is a literate, sometimes humorous page-turner in the classic tradition. Well-read adventure lovers are in for a treat looking for echoes of The Odyssey and Tom Sawyer . . . a strong choice for every type of library."
